How We're Building a More Sustainable Farm

Sustainability has become one of those words that gets used everywhere.

Sometimes it feels like nobody really explains what it actually means.

For us, it's quite simple.

We want to leave the farm in a better position than we found it.

Not because somebody tells us to.

Because it's where we live, where we work and hopefully where future generations will farm too.

Every small improvement adds up

People often imagine sustainability as one huge change.

In reality, it's usually lots of small decisions.

Repairing something instead of replacing it.

Making better use of what we've already got.

Planning jobs more efficiently.

Looking after the land properly.

None of those things make headlines, but together they make a real difference.

Almost powered by the sun

One of the biggest changes we've made has been investing in solar power.

On bright days, much of the electricity we use comes from the farm itself.

That means lower running costs, less reliance on the grid and a step towards making the business more resilient for the future.

For us, it's been one of the best investments we've made.

Looking after the land

Healthy land produces healthy grass.

Healthy grass helps produce healthy cattle.

Everything is connected.

Looking after fields isn't just about this year.

It's about making sure they're still productive for years to come.

Reducing waste wherever we can

No farm ever runs completely waste free.

But we think it's important to avoid waste wherever possible.

Whether that's making the most of forage, maintaining equipment properly or supplying our beef frozen to reduce food waste at home, every little improvement matters.

Farming for the next generation

It's easy to focus on today.

The next job.

The next field.

The next load of feed.

But farming has always been about thinking years ahead.

Trees planted today won't provide shelter overnight.

Buildings are expected to last decades.

Improvements made now might benefit people we'll never even meet.

That's one of the things we love about farming.

Sustainability and profitability can work together

There's sometimes an idea that sustainable farming and running a successful business are opposites.

We don't see it that way.

If a farm isn't financially sustainable, it's difficult to invest in better buildings, renewable energy or improvements for livestock.

For us, looking after the environment and building a viable business go hand in hand.

Always learning

We certainly don't have all the answers.

Agriculture is changing all the time.

New technology.

New ideas.

New opportunities.

We'll keep learning, keep improving and keep looking for better ways of doing things.

That's what farming has always been about.

Looking ahead

Flatts Farm is a small family farm in the Yorkshire Dales, and we're proud of what we're building.

Not because we're perfect.

But because every year we're trying to leave things just a little bit better than the year before.

We think that's a good place to start.
